ISA AFFINITY BUSINESS PARTNER ELI WILNER DISCUSSES RESTORATION OF RARE STANFORD WHITE GRILLE FRAME

$

0

Eli Wilner & Company was recently challenged with one of the most complex frame restorations they have seen in 35 years of business when a painting by Thomas Wilmer Dewing, Lady with a Fan, on loan to the Baltimore Museum of Art from the Maryland State Archives, was unable to be placed on view to the public due to the severe deterioration of its frame.

Many of the country’s museums and other public institutions on Eli Wilner & Company’s extensive client list have turned to Mr. Wilner and his staff for their expertise when addressing important re-framing projects. There are a variety of reasons why a work might need to be re-framed: sometimes a frame is not historically appropriate or a curator seeks to have a cohesive aesthetic for an exhibition. Frequently, due to improper handling or storage, combined with environmental factors and age, a frame may become damaged and the costs of restoration need to be weighed against total replacement. Another step in making that decision is researching the source of the frame itself. Labels and any other provenance documents are consulted to determine whether the frame is original to the painting. It is important to distinguish whether it was chosen or designed by the artist, or if it was selected by an owner of the work of art.

In the case of the damaged Dewing frame, which the experts agree must be original to the painting, it is also a rare and extraordinary example of a floating grille frame design by Stanford White – one of the most important figures in American frame history, as well as a member of the prominent architecture firm McKim, Mead & White at the turn of the 20th Century. Therefore, the White frame is of significant value itself, especially when paired with this exquisite painting by Dewing.

Unfortunately, over time, the grille had become broken and distorted, and the crispness of the ornament had been severely eroded.

Detail of corroded Stanford White frame prior to and after restoration (above)

When approaching any restoration project, the Wilner craftspeople make every effort to salvage the original materials. In this case, the entire grille element was deemed beyond repair and the decision was made to carefully remove it from the gilded substrate. The re-creation was done using the same techniques as the original with internal wire reinforcement. The expert mold-makers were able to achieve the flat contour the grille would originally have had by using other period frames by White as reference. The grille section was then gilded, re-applied to the frame, and the correct patina was achieved. The frame is now ready to be re united with the painting and be enjoyed by the public for years to come in its original splendor.

The technological advancements of the 20th Century affected the nature of the public’s perception of picture framing because of the increased availability and affordability of mass-produced length molding that can be quickly cut and joined. This trend, combined with the influence of stripped down interior design aesthetics, separated many paintings from their original frames. It is commendable that the curators in this situation took the time to research and follow through with this frame restoration project and reflects a movement within the international art market where craftsmanship, historical importance, and value of the picture frame is once again being acknowledged. This is not only apparent in the many public institutions that Eli Wilner & Company are honored to have on their client list, but also with private collectors, who along with their art advisers, have become more actively engaged in the evaluation of framing possibilities with new acquisitions. Many are also becoming aware that frame restoration is often as critical as conservation that may be needed for the artwork it contains and tending to repairs before they are too far gone will alleviate costs and aggravations in the years to come.

On a related note: Eli Wilner & Company has been chosen by Lyndhurst Mansion, a National Historic Trust Site, located in Tarrytown, NY, to collaborate with its staff in restoring and re-hanging the estate’s grand Picture Gallery. The Wilner staff will restore frames that have sustained damage over time and replace those on paintings that have lost their original frames and have been in storage for years.  Wilner will also assist with the installation of pictures, maintaining the multi-tiered Victorian style of hanging that has been documented in photographs since the 1870s but will bring many of the best works in the collection to eye level. The extensive collection of finely framed paintings assembled by railroad baron Jay Gould and his daughters include works by Gustave Courbet, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Theodore Rousseau, Charles Daubigny, Jean-Leon Gerome, Jean Beraud and two important works by Bouguereau. The mansion will reopen for public tours in May 2014. www.Lyndhurst.org

A Moving Proposition

My family recently moved from one house to another across town.  That seems simple enough.  Neither house is large and other than my 500 pounds of books we don’t have too many items.  We even had a group of hungry college kids who work for BBQ to help.  Despite all that, it took over a month to prepare to move and almost two weeks to accomplish it.  During my month of moving I also had two clients who were also preparing to move.

If you don’t move often yourself you may not think about all that entails.  I was concerned about making sure my breakable items stayed whole and spent a lot of time thinking of proper packing.  One of my clients was worrying about leaving their family antiques in storage for two years while he serves overseas in the military.  That is a common problem in my community.  A full condition report is very important as well as establishing value.  Another common issue is the one involved when someone is moving into a home that is half the size of the current one.  My second client must decide what she’s taking with her and what she’ll do with the rest. I am appraising several pieces so she can make sure she’s keeping the best of her collection.  Next week, I’ll look at a broken Lalique vase to establish the value for replacement under the owners insurance policy.  I got an email only yesterday from a client who let me know that a valuable family antique had made a cross country move successfully thanks to the the custom crate I suggested the mover use.

I’m telling you all this because I wanted to remind you that appraisers can be involved in  many aspects of the moving industry.  I’ve helped many clients prepare for a move by valuing their items including the current condition and I’ve worked on claims settlements for both the mover and shipper (not at the same time!).  Spend a little time thinking about all the ways you can use your appraisal skills to help someone who is moving.  A good starting place is contacting the shippers in your community but that is just the first step.  Talk to realtors, employee relations managers for large employers, home owner’s insurance salespeople, military housing specialists, anyone you can think of who deals with people coming and going to your area.  I get referrals from other antique dealers, cleaning services, jewelers and even the guys who manage the parking meters and lots in town (go figure).  My dentist and butcher have given my name to people who have damage claims.  Make sure you are the friendly neighborhood person who helps fix appraisal problems.  The Lalique vase actually made it through the person’s move but was broken when a new appliance was being delivered so don’t forget to leave your card with furniture and appliance stores too.  I’ve left cards, written short articles for newsletters, offered short talks on preparing to move; all ways to make my name familiar in those circles.

The best tip I can give you for marketing your business is easy.  List the obvious sources of referrals then get a second cup of coffee and think of all the crazy links you can.  You can always strike through the ones that really won’t work but you’d be surprised what brilliant ideas you can come up with when you allow yourself the freedom to think outside the box...or the moving crate as may be.

It’s Time to Update Your Resource Library with the New Version of ISA's "A Guide to Appraising Fine Art"

$

Thanks to the hard work and diligence of members of ISA's Fine Art Committee and Fine Art instructors, one of our principal texts, A Guide to Appraising Fine Art, has been updated, extensively expanded, and redesigned as a stand-alone resource for all personal property appraisers, regardless of specialty or background. Released this April, the comprehensive, practical guide is also a companion to ISA's Appraisal of Fine Arts Course.

The manual is an entry-level, step-by-step textbook, developed for professionals engaged in the appraisal of art at any level, from the generalist seeking identification tips for distinguishing an etching from an engraving, to the highly specialized art expert looking for new online research methods. Substantial new content has been added including a 58-page guide to researching value, written exclusively for ISA by Thomas McNulty, author of Art Market Research: A Guide to Methods and Sources, and Librarian for Fine Arts at New York University. Updated and expanded information has been added to the chapters covering art history and terminology, connoisseurship, authentication, identification of frames, paintings, prints and photography.

From the preface by Leon Castner, ISA CAPP, Director of Education:

Most art texts are very broad in scope and tedious in minutia, whether dealing with the numerous schools of art or thousands of individual artists. This text is quite different. It seeks to provide a concise yet fundamental history of predominantly Western art in preparation for understanding and valuing art in the marketplace…. it (also) deals with the difficult yet necessary topic of connoisseurship. By the end of the text, one can expect to have developed a good eye and sharp mind so that when an item not readily identified or covered in the market is discovered, it can be handled in a competent and professional manner.

The International Society of Appraisers thanks editor Rick Casagrande, ISA CAPP, along with Cathy Peters, ISA CAPP; Cindy Charleston-Rosenberg, ISA CAPP; Christine Guernsey, ISA CAPP; and Perri Guthrie, ISA CAPP, all of whom were heavily involved in this endeavor.

This guide has been enthusiastically received by ISA members. Copies on hand for review and sale at Assets 2014 in Kansas City were sold out during the first day of Conference. Purchase your copy of A Guide to Appraising Fine Art from ISA’s online store.

Congratulations to Course Attendees!

The Nominating Committee is pleased to announce that we are accepting applications from members wishing to be considered for the ISA Board of Directors. Three vacancies must be filled and we are seeking candidates who will lead and inspire our membership.

Our members look to the Board to do their utmost to encourage enhanced opportunities for the membership, such as quality educational programming and the promotion of the appraisal industry, so that each individual member can benefit professionally and personally from their connection to ISA. The membership will count on your energy and commitment to these objectives. As a Board member you will have direct input into these important priorities. It is a position of responsibility and great opportunity.

While the effort is a serious one, the Board meets just four times per year with two of the sessions in teleconference. Two meetings are in person with one meeting to be held at the annual conference and the other at a meeting in the headquarters office in Chicago.

Here is your opportunity to lead, to inspire others, to work for the good of your profession and the benefit of the membership.

We will be pleased to accept letters of intent to run for the Board along with your resume. Kindly let us know how your accomplishments can best serve the Board and the Society. Please submit all letters of intent to Jan Durr, ISA CAPP no later than Friday, July 1. If you would like additional information we will be happy to send it to you.

To be the best appraiser, you’ve got to do the work

$
0
0
Many years ago, a golf instructor said to me, "Practice doesn't make perfect, it makes permanent." Though stated in the context of a sport, this statement has a lot of validity for appraisers.

Recently, I completed my five year re-qualification course through the ISA in Kansas City, MO. While many appraisers bemoan this process, it is an important one to undertake. Are you perfecting your craft or simply defaulting to bad habits and making them permanent?

As professionals in the appraisal industry, we have a duty to stay abreast of and educated about the latest trends, methods, and the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice guidelines.

ISA is the only appraisal association in the industry that requires appraisers to re-qualify every five years through a required course (on site or online) and an appraisal review process. In addition to completing the re-qualification course, one must submit evidence of your commitment to professional development, through conference/course attendance and hours worked in the industry. This advanced attention to requalification standards distinguishes the ISA. We are the organization with the highest requalification standards, ensuring our appraisers remain relevant throughout their careers.

So what has this two-step process taught me?

There is nothing like a classroom setting where you can discuss the changing standards of the appraisal industry with your colleagues. Part of the classroom component involves an appraisal review, not only by your instructor, but with a number of your colleagues. This process can lead to fruitful discussions, clarification, and a refining of your skills and methodology. The focus is on developing a credible, well-justified report, and at the same time you are further developing your network of appraisal professionals.

While the notion of “good, better, best” was developed by Albert Sack in his book Fine Points of Furniture (1950), it should also apply to ISA appraisers. We should be aiming for the best, which starts with being dedicated to your craft and keeping on top of your field. If you are on the fence about continuing with ISA and think that the re-qualification process is arduous, it is. But it is worth it. As the athletic saying goes…just do it.

You are looking more like Maria Sharapova every day!

$

Author: Marian R. Aubry, ISA AM
Maria Sharapova, like many professional athletes, has a team of coaches to enhance her game. They include physical trainers, nutritionists, a team of psychologists, a marketing team, and even hitting partners. Evidently it takes a village to make a Maria Sharapova. While most of us will never be mistaken for a world class tennis player, we can all take a lesson from this approach: Professionals who are at or wish to be at the top of their game, both on the court and off, take advantage of being coached.

Employing a coach usually takes a bit of money although there are many coaching opportunities available free or at low cost. Every city has a group of volunteer professionals available to help small businesses get off the ground or move to the next level. SCORE arranges a one on one consultation with a retired business executive. If you have not looked into this opportunity, I urge you to consider it. It is enormously helpful to see your business through another businessman’s eyes. Your community has opportunities with professional business clubs, networking breakfasts, and Chamber of Commerce after-hours events that help keep your business ‘in the game’ and connected with others in the business world.

Members of ISA also have opportunities by virtue of membership. Annual conference is a concentrated opportunity to be with the best in the industry. Questions are welcomed by them, as well as, by the many seasoned members in attendance.  Our own Todd Sigety’s generous power point program at conference gave every member, newbie or old hand, access to a powerful presentation; one that would take time and experience to produce on our own.

ISA perennially and proudly points to the friendliness and generosity of members, however the recent conference survey results made Board members realize we need to strengthen this.  While we were encouraged by overwhelmingly positive feedback, we also heard about our weaknesses, and we want you to know we are definitely paying attention. It seems that not enough of our members are aware of the new Mentorship Program at ISA. This idea, fairly new at ISA, is certainly the best on-the-job training program a new appraiser could hope to have although we certainly need to “market” this opportunity much better. We also have a new membership committee at ISA (I am Board Liaison). This new committee is working to reach out to all members, helping them to stay engaged with the process of being or becoming a member, furthering their ISA education, and making sure their questions and concerns are heard and offering help. We are working also at some ideas for pairing old hands with new members at the next Conference so that new members can have a chance to ask probing questions…one-on-one. Conference is a perfect place to facilitate this. We are also considering more ways to come together socially at Conference; especially important for young and new members. Collegiality is one of the greatest advantages of an ISA membership. Everyone thrives in such an atmosphere; it is the hallmark of the best coaching and a clear opportunity for gaining an edge. Just ask Maria.

Ask Leon: What to do when people want you to appraise everything

ISA members are invited to send in their questions on all things appraising and education to Leon Castner, ISA CAPP. Leon will share his answers on the ISA Now Blog. Please send questions to leoncastner@comcast.net.

Question: I just finished the Core Course. I was at a party and I mentioned the class. Now people want me to appraise everything including stamps and rings. How on earth do I start appraising rings? (J.M.)

Answer: The short answer is that you only appraise what you are competent to appraise-no matter what class you took. However, we all have general specialties, either fine art, antiques & residential contents, gems & jewelry, etc. It’s the next step in the education and membership process. Take a specialty class! It will provide guidelines for many of the things you will encounter on a fairly regularly basis. However, classes do not take the place of hands-on experience, which one learns diving into things. In a sense, it’s like a Catch 22-if you recall the old Joseph Heller book. (You shouldn’t appraise items you’ve never done but you can’t get to the next step until you actually appraise them.)

Many of our members have a mentoring process and/or use interns and new appraisers. They assist the appraiser in physical examinations, research, and ancillary jobs that provide them training in items they may not be qualified to appraise on their own.

We learn by doing. Almost every job provides an opportunity to expand our expertise and broaden our specialty field and, yes, we often encounter items we haven’t seen. (The methodology you’ve learned usually applies across the board.) How else does one learn to skate or swim or ride a bike without attempting to do it?

Of course, I think one should be very careful about tackling a type of item they’ve never done before, particularly if it falls out of the general category of one’s background and interest. After all, we not only have ourselves to think about but our clients and third parties! (If our bike crashes they go down as well!)

To your particular question: Stamps are a paper collectible that are not the same as furniture, glass, or art. If you’ve never heard of a Scott’s number or a perforation, stay away. “Rings” could be anything, but in all probability involve precious metal and gemstones. Having no training in either leaves one up the creek without a paddle (and probably without a boat).

That’s why we love to network at ISA. We can often share our assignments with those who are competent. We can send emails and digital photos. We can ask questions and be the eyes and ears for others more qualified. As we share we begin to see the fruits of our labor. Our own expertise begins to grow and we develop a strong network of associates. The business pie gets bigger…and so does our slice.
